The park itself is divided into the South and North Mavora lakes with the Mararoa river in between the lakes. There is no admission fee unless you want to camp there overnight. The south mavora lake is fishing well along the roadside bays - fish a damsel nymph either to sighted trout, or blind across the weedbeds. There are still some big browns in the Mararoa above the key - unfortunatly they often sit on the drop offs and require a deel nymph presentation - and didymo in this river makes this difficult. Fishing on the lakes is permitted all year round. Fishing in Fiordland rivers is allowed from the 1st of November until the 31st of May with the exception of the Waiau River which opens on the 1st of October until the 31st of May. The Upper Waiau between Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri holds the largest fish stock in New Zealand. This section with its slower moving and larger volume of water is also good for spin fishing. There are sections where it is difficult to access, especially just upstream from the town of Mataura as the river flows between high rugged banks. As the river gets close to the sea it becomes tidal and so really only suited to the spin and bait anglers.

The Mavora Lakes consist of two lakes named North Mavora and South Mavora. They are situated amongst an impressive landscape of mountains, lakes, forest and tussock grassland. As a general rule, flows 20-30cm above normal are generally suitable for spin and bait fishing. And while the weather in the province would have made it near impossible to cast a line earlier in. Southland#x27;s deep, glacial lakes, Wanaka, Wakatipu, Te Anau, and Manapouri, offer challenging salmon and trout fishing. It also has smaller, less accessible lakes like Mavora. Mataura River and its tributaries offer over 150km of easily accessed waters with brown trout and the occasional salmon. It#x27;s a top dry fly river system. All tackle and equipment supplied. The Waiau River is the largest of the Southland rivers, well stocked with both rainbow and brown trout offering a range of options for all forms of trout fishing. The trail along South Mavora Lake was more forested and continued much closer alongside the Mararoa River as it headed south. With the bright intensity of greens hidden away on that forest trail, I wasn#x27;t feeling so blue anymore about the grey weather and soggy feet, it really did feel quite magical.

An uber geeky Lord of the Rings fan told me of all the places used around Mavora Lakes in the film, looking clueless as to his scene re-enactments he pulled the film up on his phone, even showing me his photos of the EXACT tree. As I trotted by the lake that day, all the trees looked pretty similar to be honest. The first 30km downstream of the weir provides excellent rainbow and brown trout fishing but access is limited. Several new access points have been opened recently and these are set out on our Southern Scenic Route brochure. The reaches from the Weir are mostly wadeable but care must be taken as the boulders are large and often slippery.

As river flows start to recede, spin angling is at its most effective. Use brightly coloured lures and soft baits. As a general rule, I recommend that that if a river#x27;s level is 20cm above normal flows, the conditions are ideal for spin fishing. The large lakes, Te Anau and Manapouri, and the smaller lakes Monowaiand North Mavora are ideal for trolling from a boat. While they don#x27;t have large trout populations compared to lakes farther north, they are beautiful scenic gems where competent anglers can expect to catch several fish in a day#x27;s fishing. Trolling, or spin fishing from a boat, is also rewarding. The Cotton Cordell Pencil Popper is one of the best lures for topwater fishing, and it happens to be quite enticing for active pike.
